What is a token board?+
A visual chart where a learner earns tokens for agreed behaviours or steps, then exchanges a full board for a chosen reward. It makes an abstract 'later' concrete and visible.
How many tokens should a board have?+
Start small — three tokens — so the first exchange happens quickly. Increase to five or ten only once the exchange is clearly understood.
Should the child choose the reward?+
Yes. A reward chosen by the learner is the whole point; an adult-chosen reward usually fails within days. Offer a short visual menu to pick from before starting.
Is a token board the same as bribery?+
No. A bribe is offered to stop a behaviour already happening. A token board is agreed in advance, with clear criteria, and is faded out as the skill becomes routine.
